Detective Division

The Criminal Investigation Unit consists of detectives who investigate crimes in order to provide information that will cause a successful prosecution of perpetrators of criminal offenses through quality investigations. Detectives also assist in community problem solving through timely identification of emerging crime patterns and by developing crime prevention initiatives in conjunction with other units within the police department.

The investigation of Bias Based offenses is the responsibility of the officer in charge of the Criminal Investigations Unit shall also be responsible for investigating all incidents involving conduct which constitutes bias behavior.

Detectives assigned to the CIU perform all subsequent investigations involving major crimes such as:

  • Homicide (Murder, Manslaughter, Death by Auto)
  • Arson
  • Robbery
  • Kidnapping
  • Burglary
  • Sexual Assaults
  • Any other offense involving violence to another that results with serious bodily injury
  • Any offense involving controlled dangerous substances
  • Shoplifting offenses when actor is in custody
  • Thefts of property (4th – 1st degree) when actor is in custody
  • Domestic Violence offenses when actor is in custody

Detectives also investigate all incidents involving suspicious deaths, Officer‐involved shooting or other use of force resulting in serious bodily injury, missing / exploited children. All preservation and handling of evidence that exceeds the normal capabilities of the Patrol Division are handled by the detectives and also coordinate with outside agencies which include County, State and Federal agencies.

Additionally, The CIU conducts all background investigations for firearm permit applications, public safety employment applications and borough permit applications such as ABC licenses and Solicitor Permit
